Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup is poised for a series of significant upgrades over the next two years, culminating in what could be the most dramatic redesign since the introduction of the M1 chip. While updated M4 Pro and M4 Max models are expected imminently as a straightforward chip refresh, a new report paints an exciting picture for a later, more transformative launch.

According to The Elec, Apple is working on a top-tier MacBook Pro variant slated for release in the fourth quarter of 2026. The star of the show will be a stunning OLED display, marking Apple’s first use of this panel technology in its laptops.

The OLED Revolution: Brighter, Deeper, and Touch-Sensitive

Samsung Display is reportedly set to begin mass production of both 14-inch and 16-inch OLED panels for Apple in May 2026. This aligns with previous industry whispers of a late-2026 to early-2027 launch window. The move to OLED promises unparalleled contrast ratios, perfect blacks, and potentially higher peak brightness, which would be a boon for creative professionals and media consumers alike.

Intriguingly, the report suggests this new OLED panel is also engineered to bring touch functionality to the MacBook Pro—a first for Apple’s laptop line. While Apple has long resisted merging iPad and Mac interfaces, this could signal a new phase of interaction, especially within the evolving macOS ecosystem.

As detailed in the original report from The Elec, not all components for the new MacBook Pro have been finalized. The article notes that Apple is still adjusting design parameters, likely in an effort to manage the cost increases associated with these premium new features.

Beyond the Screen: Face ID, Dynamic Island, and the M6 Generation

The upgrades won’t stop at the display. This flagship 2026 MacBook Pro is also expected to introduce several other hallmark Apple features from its other devices:

  • Face ID: The reliable facial recognition system, currently available on iPhones and iPads, is strongly tipped to finally make its debut on the Mac, offering a more secure and convenient alternative to Touch ID.
  • Dynamic Island: The much-discussed notch is expected to be replaced by Apple’s interactive Dynamic Island, better integrating the front-facing camera and sensors into the user experience.
  • Next-Gen Silicon: Powering it all will be Apple’s M6-series chips. This new generation of Apple Silicon will likely focus on gains in AI performance and power efficiency.

However, not every model will get the full suite of upgrades. Noted Apple analyst Mark Gurman has previously indicated that the base MacBook Pro with a standard M6 chip may miss out on the OLED screen and new chassis, sticking with the current mini-LED display. The dazzling new OLED panel, touch capability, and redesign would be reserved for the higher-end M6 Pro and M6 Max variants.

A Potential Triple Launch on the Horizon

This tiered strategy suggests Apple could be planning a major launch event in late 2026, where it unveils three new MacBook Pro flavours alongside three new laptop SoCs (M6, M6 Pro, M6 Max) simultaneously. This would create a clear and compelling performance and feature ladder for professionals.

For now, users can look forward to the expected M4-powered refreshes for a performance bump. But the real game-changer—a MacBook Pro with a brilliant OLED touchscreen, Face ID, and the power of M6—appears to be on the horizon for 2026.
