At the Mobile World Congress 2026, Lenovo is daring to rethink the laptop. Forget dongles and docks—the new ThinkBook Modular AI PC concept is all about magnetic attachments, swappable ports, and a display that can grow from 14 inches to 19 inches in a snap.
Barcelona, Spain – There is a familiar rhythm to laptop launches these days: a thinner chassis here, a faster processor there. But every so often, a company shows up with an idea that makes you stop and ask, “Wait, why hasn’t anyone done that before?” At MWC 2026, Lenovo just had that moment.
Tucked among the usual suspects of flagship refreshes on the show floor is the Lenovo ThinkBook Modular AI PC. It’s a concept device, which means you can’t buy it tomorrow, but it offers a tantalizing glimpse at a future where your laptop isn’t a fixed object, but a customizable system that adapts to your workflow.
The Chassis That Grows With You
On the surface, the base unit looks like a standard—albeit sleek—14-inch clamshell laptop. It’s powered by Intel’s latest Core Ultra 7 255H (an Arrow Lake processor), paired with a healthy 32GB of RAM and a 1TB PCIe SSD. The base display is a gorgeous 14-inch OLED panel boasting a sharp 3840x2400 resolution, a buttery 120Hz refresh rate, and 500 nits of brightness.
But the magic isn't inside the case; it’s on the sides.
Lenovo has equipped the chassis with a series of magnetic and electrical contact points. These allow the ThinkBook to connect with a range of physical "attachments" that fundamentally change how you use the computer.
The star of the show is the secondary display attachment. By snapping this extra 14-inch OLED screen onto the side of the main lid, the laptop transforms instantly into a dual-screen powerhouse. Suddenly, you have a combined workspace that Lenovo claims can effectively scale up to 19 inches of screen real estate. It evokes the spirit of the company’s stunning dual-screen consumer device, the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i , but with a modular twist. Unlike a fixed dual-screen device, this setup allows you to remove the second screen when you want to travel light.
More Than Just a Second Screen
The modularity doesn't stop at displays. In a configuration that will delight road warriors who have fumbled with dongles in coffee shops, the keyboard deck itself is modular.
Lenivo is showcasing switchable modules that fit into the base of the laptop. Need to present to a projector? Snap in an HDMI module. Transferring data to a camera? Swap it for a full-sized SD card reader. This system allows users to customize the I/O ports on the fly, effectively eliminating the need for a separate dongle for every new environment.
When the secondary screen isn't needed for a dual-display setup, it can also be detached and used as a standalone wireless monitor. Place it to the side of your main laptop (which would then be fitted with the standard keyboard module and a "display module" in the lid), and you have a vertical or horizontal sidecar for Slack, Spotify, or reference materials.
The Specs and The Reality Check
Of course, putting a prototype on a show floor comes with compromises. To accommodate the modular connectors and the weight of potential attachments, the ThinkBook Modular concept currently houses a relatively modest 33Wh battery—significantly smaller than what you'd find in a production laptop today. It also features a Harman Kardon 2+2 speaker setup with Dolby Atmos.
Lenovo has a history of turning bold concepts into real products, but the company is remaining tight-lipped about any potential release date for the ThinkBook Modular AI PC. For now, it remains a "concept," a proof of technology designed to gauge interest and solve engineering challenges.
But in a world where our smartphones have become modular accessories (cameras, lenses, microphones), the idea of a modular laptop feels less like science fiction and more like the logical next step. At MWC 2026, Lenovo just made the static laptop look a little... outdated.
