Microsoft fans hoping for a spring refresh of the company’s popular Surface lineup might need to temper their expectations. According to well-known industry leaker Roland Quandt, the anticipated next-generation Surface PCs have been pushed back – and the news on pricing is far from cheerful.
Just last week, Quandt first shared a flurry of details about the upcoming Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12, sparking excitement across the tech community. Shortly afterward, Windows Central added more fuel to the fire, reporting that both ARM and Intel-powered variants are in the works. The same report suggested that all versions of the Surface Laptop 8 would be configurable with OLED displays – a first for the series. And if that wasn’t enough, whispers of smaller Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models also emerged.
But now, the mood has shifted.
“About a month” delay – and prices that are “so bad”
Writing on Bluesky, Roland Quandt (who has a long and reliable track record with Microsoft hardware leaks) dropped a pair of sobering updates. First, he confirmed that Microsoft has decided to delay the introduction of any new Surface hardware “by about a month.” The reason behind the pushback remains unclear – supply chain constraints, software fine-tuning, or strategic repositioning are all plausible.
More worryingly, Quandt added that “prices are… so bad,” without elaborating further. That cryptic warning, however, has already been given some concrete context by a Dutch retailer. According to early listings, the Surface Pro 12 could be up to 65% more expensive than its predecessor in certain configurations. To put that in perspective, the current Surface Pro 11 starts at $999 on Amazon – a 65% jump would push some variants well above $1,600.

Intel Panther Lake vs. Snapdragon X2 – a staggered rollout
Quandt’s “one month” delay likely applies primarily to Microsoft’s upcoming Intel-based models. Those devices are expected to be powered by Intel’s next-generation Panther Lake chips. If the original launch window was May or June, a one-month slip would push them into late June or early July. However, with no official confirmation from Redmond, it’s entirely possible that these Intel variants could slide further – perhaps into July or even August.
On the other side of the aisle, the Snapdragon X2-powered versions (successors to the current ARM-based Surface devices) are reportedly on a different timetable. Those are now expected to arrive between July and September 2026. That’s a wider window, suggesting Microsoft might be taking extra time to ensure software emulation, battery life, and AI features are fully polished before launch.
The staggered approach isn’t surprising. Microsoft has been walking a careful line between x86 compatibility and ARM efficiency since the original Surface RT. With Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series showing real promise, the company is likely keen to avoid another compatibility fiasco while still pushing the envelope on performance and power consumption.
What about OLED and the smaller models?
Earlier reports from Windows Central indicated that all Surface Laptop 8 variants – whether Intel or ARM – would be available with OLED display options. That would mark a major upgrade from the current LCD panels, offering deeper blacks, better contrast, and more vibrant colors. Creative professionals and media consumers will undoubtedly welcome the change.
The same source also mentioned that smaller Surface Pro and Surface Laptop devices are in development. These could be aimed at the education market or budget-conscious consumers, potentially reviving the “Surface Go” form factor with more modern internals. Unfortunately, Quandt’s latest update didn’t clarify whether those smaller models are also affected by the delay or the pricing woes.
No official pictures – and a strategy shake-up?
As of today, no official press renders or leaked images of the new Surface Laptop 8 or Surface Pro 12 have emerged. That’s unusual this close to a typical product launch, and it lends credence to the idea that Microsoft has pressed the pause button on its marketing rollout.
Interestingly, a recent analysis over at LaptopsCheck suggests this isn’t just a simple schedule slip. According to their deep dive into Microsoft’s Surface strategy shake-up, the company may be rethinking its entire release cadence. The days of predictable annual refreshes could be ending, replaced by a more opportunistic “launch when ready” approach that prioritizes meaningful generational leaps over calendar-driven updates.
That same publication also highlighted Microsoft’s quiet price increases across the existing Surface lineup, which began several weeks ago. Those incremental hikes might have been a precursor to the steeper pricing expected for the next-gen models. If the Surface Pro 12 really does land at a 65% premium, Microsoft will need to justify that jump with serious hardware and software improvements – faster chips, longer battery life, AI accelerators, and perhaps even new form-factor innovations.
What this means for buyers
For consumers, the takeaway is bittersweet. On one hand, waiting for the Surface Laptop 8 or Surface Pro 12 could mean getting a genuinely next-generation device with OLED screens, vastly improved processors, and potentially groundbreaking AI features tied to Windows 12 (or whatever Microsoft calls its upcoming OS). On the other hand, the delayed launch and rumored price explosion mean that early adopters will need both patience and deeper pockets.
