| The new Predator Helios Neo 18 also contains a 92 Wh battery for a 2 Wh bump on its 2025 predecessor. |
Gaming laptop enthusiasts, take note – Acer has just dropped a pair of significant updates to its Predator Helios line in Europe, and the headline act is a striking improvement in battery life. The new Predator Helios Neo 16S promises over twice the runtime of our recent review unit, and it’s one of the first 16-inch gaming laptops to feature Intel’s next-generation Panther Lake platform. Meanwhile, Acer has also quietly released the long-awaited high-end version of the Predator Helios Neo 18, now packing an RTX 5080 Laptop GPU.
For anyone who follows the Helios series closely, you’ll know that Acer has been busy refreshing its lineup throughout 2025 and into 2026. But these latest arrivals – especially the Neo 16S – signal a serious leap forward in efficiency and raw performance.
Twice the Battery Life, Thanks to Panther Lake
Let’s start with the more surprising announcement: the Predator Helios Neo 16S. When we reviewed the previous generation of 16-inch Helios Neo models, battery life was … well, let’s just say you kept the power adapter close. Gaming laptops aren’t exactly known for all-day stamina, but Acer claims the new Neo 16S delivers more than double the battery life of that earlier unit.
The secret sauce? Intel’s Panther Lake platform. While most manufacturers are still shipping Arrow Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh parts, Acer has jumped ahead with Panther Lake – Intel’s upcoming architecture that focuses heavily on power efficiency without sacrificing gaming chops. The Neo 16S is one of the first gaming laptops of any size to pack a Panther Lake chip, and early indications suggest it’s a game-changer for on-the-go play.
Exact specifications for the Neo 16S haven’t been fully detailed yet, but we know it retains the same aggressive Predator design language, a 16-inch WQXGA display option, and Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series graphics. However, the headline improvement is battery runtime – and if real-world tests match Acer’s claims, this could be the first truly all-day gaming laptop. Predator Helios Neo 18: Finally, the RTX 5080 Variant Arrives
While the Neo 16S grabs the spotlight for efficiency, the Predator Helios Neo 18 is getting a serious performance injection. As we reported back in March, Acer originally refreshed the Helios Neo 18 with Intel’s Arrow Lake HX Plus processors. At that time, the top-tier model featured the Core Ultra 9 275HX, and Acer promised that a “PHN18-I71” variant with the newer Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus would land in June.
Well, it’s now May (or early June depending on your region), and that more powerful SKU has quietly hit European store shelves – not just with the 290HX Plus, but also with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU. According to our benchmarks, the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus delivers roughly 7% higher CPU performance than the 275HX, making it a meaningful uplift for CPU-bound titles and productivity workloads.
The RTX 5080 inside the Helios Neo 18 appears to be configured at a 115W TGP, boosting up to 140W with Dynamic Boost – which is in line with other premium gaming laptops we’ve tested this year. That’s not the highest-wattage 5080 on the market, but Acer seems to have prioritized a balance of performance and thermals inside the Neo 18’s chassis.
Display: IPS Over Mini LED – A Surprising Trade-Off
One detail that might raise eyebrows: Acer has chosen to equip this new RTX 5080 version with a 2,560 x 1,600-pixel IPS panel, rather than offering a Mini LED option like we saw on the 2025 Helios 18 (non-Neo) edition. On paper, the IPS panel is still very respectable: 240 Hz refresh rate, 3 ms response times, 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage, and a peak brightness of 500 nits. But for a laptop priced this high, some enthusiasts will miss the deeper contrast and local dimming of Mini LED.
That said, the IPS panel is likely a cost-cutting and availability decision. And honestly? 500 nits with full DCI-P3 is still a gorgeous screen for both gaming and creative work – just don’t expect OLED-level blacks.
Pricing and Availability
So, how much will this RTX 5080-powered beast set you back? Acer is charging £3,499 for the new Predator Helios Neo 18 configuration, which comes with 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB of NVMe storage. That’s £200 more than an equivalent 2025 SKU with the older 275HX and RTX 4080-ish performance – but given the generational leaps, the premium might be worth it for early adopters.
If you’re ready to pull the trigger, the Acer UK store has the official product page live right here. Alternatively, Amazon is also carrying the previous Core Ultra 9 275HX model (with RTX 5070-ish graphics) for those on a tighter budget – you can check current pricing on Amazon.
Final Thoughts: Two Very Different, Very Exciting Laptops
Acer’s dual launch highlights two different philosophies. The Predator Helios Neo 16S is all about mobility and battery life – something gaming laptops rarely excel at. If Panther Lake truly delivers double the runtime without throttling during gameplay, Acer could have a category-defining product on its hands.
The Helios Neo 18, on the other hand, is a pure desktop replacement. The Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and RTX 5080 combination will tear through 1440p and even 4K gaming, and while the IPS panel is a slight compromise versus Mini LED, the overall package is undeniably powerful.
We’ll have full reviews of both laptops in the coming weeks, including battery benchmarks for the Neo 16S and thermal analysis for the RTX 5080 Neo 18. For now, European gamers have two compelling new reasons to open their wallets – one for the road, and one for the desk.
