Dell Pro Precision 5 14S and Pro Precision 5 16S feature fingerprint readers embedded in the top right corner of the keyboard.

For years, professionals have faced a frustrating dilemma. If you needed the raw processing power for CAD, data science, or content creation, you had to accept the consequences: a heavy, bulky laptop that felt more like a gym weight than a travel companion. Conversely, if you wanted a sleek, portable machine, you had to sacrifice the performance required for serious workloads.

Dell appears to have found the elusive middle ground with the launch of the Dell Pro Precision 5 14S and the Dell Pro Precision 5 16S. These new mobile workstations aim to deliver the horsepower of a traditional workstation packed inside a chassis that rivals the size of standard thin-and-light multimedia laptops.

Lightweight Powerhouses

The most striking feature of the new Pro Precision 5 series is their footprint. Dell is making a bold claim with the 14-inch model, stating that the Pro Precision 5 14S is the company’s thinnest and lightest mobile workstation to feature H-series mobile processors. Starting at just 1.4 kg (3.1 lbs.), this device sits in the same weight class as popular consumer ultrabooks, yet it houses the internals necessary for professional-grade workflows.

The 16-inch model, the Pro Precision 5 16S, naturally offers a larger display but maintains a similarly refined, portable design language that defies the traditional workstation stereotype.

Cutting-Edge Silicon: Intel vs. AMD

Under the hood, Dell is offering users a choice between the latest generation processors from Intel and AMD. Buyers can configure these new workstations with either the Intel Core Ultra 300 "Panther Lake" or AMD Ryzen AI 400 "Gorgon Point" APUs.

For users whose workflows rely heavily on graphics performance without a discrete GPU, the processor choice is critical. High-end SKUs equipped with the Intel Panther Lake chips can utilize the Arc B390 iGPU, which features 12 Xe cores. This integrated graphics solution is proving to be a significant step up in performance. Meanwhile, the AMD Ryzen AI 400 options currently top out with the last-gen Radeon 890M iGPU. For professionals who want the absolute best integrated graphics performance right out of the gate, the Intel configuration is the clear winner.

Memory and Build Quality

Dell hasn't skimped on memory technology, either. Both the Pro Precision 5 14S and 16S support up to 64 GB of 8,533 MT/s LPCAMM2 memory. This new memory standard is a major advantage over traditional soldered LPDDR5X, as it is technically user-replaceable. This offers peace of mind for IT departments and professionals looking to future-proof their investment.

However, there is a slight caveat to that flexibility. The LPCAMM2 form factor hasn't yet become mainstream in the consumer aftermarket. While the slot is replaceable in theory, finding compatible upgrade modules outside of Dell’s supply chain may be difficult in the short term.

Physically, the laptops feature a durable metal body, a backlit keyboard, and a fingerprint reader for enhanced security.

Port Selection: Connectivity for the Office and Beyond

When it comes to ports, the 16-inch model offers a robust selection that rivals many desktop replacements. Looking at the Dell Pro Precision 5 16S, users can expect:

  • An HDMI port
  • Two USB Type-A ports
  • Two USB Type-C ports
  • An Ethernet jack
  • A 3.5 mm audio port

This mix of legacy USB-A and modern USB-C (likely Thunderbolt 4 on Intel models) makes it easy to connect to office peripherals without a dongle. However, there is one notable omission: the lack of a full-sized SD or microSD card reader. For photographers, videographers, and drone operators who rely on SD cards for quick transfers, this is a missing convenience.

If Dell does not include a Type-C dongle in the box—which is often the case with premium workstations—you may need to pick one up. If you find yourself needing to expand connectivity, a reliable USB-C hub can be found here on Amazon.

Availability and Pricing

According to Dell, the Pro Precision 5 14S and Pro Precision 5 16S are scheduled to be available in May. As of the publication of this article, the company has not yet shared specific pricing details. Given the "Pro Precision" branding and the inclusion of cutting-edge components like LPCAMM2 and the latest H-series chips, these laptops are expected to be positioned at a premium price point, targeting professionals who need reliability and performance in a mobile form factor.

With the Pro Precision 5 series, Dell is sending a clear message: you no longer have to choose between portability and power.
