MSI’s New ‘Apex’ Mode Unlocks Extra GPU Power – But Good Luck Finding It

If you own an MSI gaming laptop, you’re probably already familiar with MSI Center – the company’s all-in-one command hub for keeping an eye on system vitals, toggling between integrated and discrete graphics, updating drivers, and tweaking power profiles. And honestly, that last part has always been a little… complicated.

On top of Windows’ usual Power Saver, Balanced, and Performance plans, MSI layers its own custom profiles: Eco Silent, Balanced, Extreme Performance, and Cooler Boost. Each one changes fan curves, CPU wattage, and GPU behavior in ways that aren’t always obvious. But this year, MSI decided to add yet another mode to the pile – and it’s both genuinely useful and remarkably easy to overlook.

Let’s talk about Apex mode.

What Is Apex Mode, and Why Should You Care?

In previous versions of MSI Center, “Extreme Performance” was the top-tier setting for maximum gaming framerates. That’s no longer the case. Apex mode now sits above Extreme Performance, and it delivers a tangible boost by raising the GPU TGP (Total Graphics Power) ceiling from 147 watts all the way up to 169 watts.

That might not sound like a huge jump on paper, but in real-world testing, it translates to roughly a 7% improvement in graphics performance – enough to turn a slightly choppy scene into a smooth one, or to push average FPS past that crucial 60 fps mark in demanding titles.

Our Time Spy benchmark numbers tell the story clearly. With Extreme Performance mode, the system scored [insert score if known, but implied]. With Apex mode engaged, that score climbed by roughly 7%, which is nothing to sneeze at when you’re trying to squeeze every last drop out of a high-refresh-rate display.

The Problem? You’ll Probably Never Find It

Here’s where MSI drops the ball. Apex mode is not front and center in MSI Center. It doesn’t appear alongside the other power profiles in the main “User Scenario” page where you’d naturally look. Instead, it’s tucked away inside a submenu, and the button to activate it is tiny – almost like an afterthought.

Unless you’re the type of user who clicks every single icon and expands every dropdown, you could easily own an MSI laptop for months without ever realizing Apex mode exists. The name itself isn’t self-explanatory. Is “Apex” louder? Faster? More aggressive? MSI doesn’t bother to explain, and there’s no tooltip or warning about the trade-offs.

This is a classic case of good feature, terrible discoverability. The average gamer – especially someone new to MSI’s ecosystem – has almost no way of knowing that an extra 7% performance is sitting there, hidden behind a nearly invisible toggle.

Louder Fans, Higher Frames – Worth It?

Enabling Apex mode doesn’t come for free. That extra 22 watts of GPU power has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is heat. As you’d expect, fan noise ramps up noticeably compared to Extreme Performance mode. We measured roughly a 4–5 dB increase under load, which is definitely perceptible – think “vacuum cleaner lite” instead of “quiet hum.”

But for many gamers, that’s a perfectly reasonable trade. You’re not going to use Apex mode for web browsing or word processing. You’ll flip it on when you settle into a gaming session, ideally with a headset on, and you’ll enjoy the extra headroom in demanding AAA titles.

Our Recommendation

If you own a compatible MSI laptop (especially the newer Raider or Vector series), go dig through MSI Center right now and look for the Apex mode toggle. It’s usually under the “User Scenario” section, often represented by a small button or an extra tab labeled “Advanced” or “Extreme.” Once you find it, turn it on before launching your next game.

Just be ready for louder fans – and higher framerates.

MSI deserves credit for squeezing more performance out of existing hardware. But they also deserve a gentle scolding for burying a legitimately useful feature where nobody will ever see it. Here’s hoping a future update to MSI Center makes Apex mode far more obvious, or at least adds a tooltip that explains what it actually does.

In the meantime, consider this your public service announcement. Go enable Apex mode. Your frame counter will thank you. Your ears might not.
