Microsoft’s Budget-Friendly Surface Laptop 13-Inch May Be Getting a Major Refresh with Snapdragon X2 Power

   

The original Surface Laptop 13-inch may soon be replaced by a Snapdragon X2-wielding successor.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop lineup has been busy this year, and it looks like the 13-inch model is about to get another shake-up — this time for everyday consumers. According to well-known leaker Roland Quandt, Microsoft is preparing a new version of its 13-inch Surface Laptop that will run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 platform. If true, this would bring the same next-gen silicon found in the Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8 to the company’s more affordable notebook.

Quandt shared the details on Bluesky and in a report on WinFuture, noting that the upcoming 13-inch laptop will come with 16 GB of RAM and either 256 GB or 512 GB of storage. Pricing in the Eurozone is expected to land at €1,319 (roughly $1,505) for the base model and €1,439 (about $1,640) for the larger storage option, taxes included. As usual, prices may vary slightly between individual member states.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft has already released two versions of the Surface Laptop 13-inch this year. Back in May, the company rolled out an Intel Panther Lake-powered “for Business” model as part of its commercial refresh. Then in June, it quietly introduced an 8 GB RAM SKU of the original Surface Laptop 13-inch, now selling for $849 on Amazon. That cheaper option uses the same hardware we criticized last year for being overpriced and underwhelming — so a fresh consumer-focused model with better specs makes a lot of sense.

While Quandt hasn’t shared every detail, we can make a few educated guesses based on Microsoft’s recent releases. The Surface Laptop 13-inch “for Business” model, for example, offers up to 24 GB of RAM and a 25% brighter IPS display than the original. That same 500-nit panel will likely carry over to this new consumer version. As for the chipset, it will probably be a slightly toned-down Snapdragon X2 — most likely the Snapdragon X2 Plus X2P-42-100, which is Qualcomm’s direct successor to the processor inside the original Surface Laptop 13-inch. The Surface Laptop 8, by comparison, uses the more powerful Snapdragon X2 Plus X2P-64-100.

For those keeping track, this new 13-inch Surface Laptop would slot neatly between Microsoft’s budget-friendly 8 GB model and its premium Snapdragon X2-powered machines. It’s a smart move for consumers who want modern performance without jumping to a larger screen or a higher price bracket.
