Leaker Roland Quandt suggests a smaller alternative to the Surface Laptop Ultra is in the works, complete with up to 48GB of RAM and Nvidia silicon
Microsoft's Surface lineup is getting crowded, and if the latest rumors hold any weight, there might be room for one more. According to well-known hardware leaker Roland Quandt, the Redmond-based company is quietly developing a third device built around Nvidia's RTX Spark platform — and this one could be significantly smaller than what we've seen so far.
A Growing RTX Spark Family
To understand where this rumored device fits, it helps to look at what Microsoft has already confirmed. The company has officially announced two RTX Spark-powered machines: the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box. Earlier this year, Microsoft also released the Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12, which are currently available starting at $1,349 on Amazon.
Microsoft is expected to share more details about its upcoming hardware at a Surface-focused event scheduled for October 7 in San Francisco. That event will likely center on the Surface Laptop Ultra, which is shaping up to be a premium workstation-class machine with a 15-inch mini-LED display and support for up to 128GB of RAM.
But according to Quandt, there's more lurking beneath the surface.
Enter Surface 'Minos'
Earlier this week, Quandt claimed that Microsoft has also created a device codenamed Surface 'Minos,' which he initially believed would serve as a smaller alternative to the Surface Laptop Ultra. In a post on Bluesky, Quandt cautioned followers to take the information "with a nice big grain of salt," while also noting that new consumer Surface models with Snapdragon X2 chips are lined up to launch soon — and they won't come cheap.
Previously, the leaker reported that Surface 'Minos' would be available with up to 32GB of RAM. Now, writing for WinFuture, Quandt claims to have seen dealer listings mentioning 48GB of RAM, along with storage options of 512GB or 1TB. The listings also allegedly reference two Nvidia CPU configurations, which are likely the 18-core and 20-core variants that have appeared on benchmarking websites in recent weeks.
Quandt also reiterates that Surface 'Minos' features a 12-inch display and will be available in Platinum or Black color options. For comparison, the Surface Laptop Ultra is expected to come in Platinum and Dark Steel.
What Else Is Coming?
The rumored Surface 'Minos' isn't the only device supposedly in Microsoft's pipeline. According to the same dealer listings, updates to the Surface Pro with a 12-inch display (codenamed "Cabo") and the Surface Laptop with a 13-inch display (codenamed "Navarro") are also on the way. Both are expected to run on Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 series processors, replacing the first-generation Snapdragon X chips found in current models.
As for pricing, European retailers reportedly list the new Surface tablet at €1,259 for the 16GB/256GB configuration and €1,379 for the 16GB/512GB version. The 13-inch Surface Laptop is said to start at €1,319 and go up to €1,439 for the 512GB model. These prices come from French retailers, so they could be slightly lower in other European markets.
Microsoft is also rumored to be preparing a new Bluetooth mouse codenamed "Coolidge," which is listed at around €90.
The Usual Caveats Apply
It's worth emphasizing that all of this information comes from dealer listings and leaker reports, not official announcements. Quandt himself acknowledges that the data he's seen could contain errors or could even be "plain wrong." There's a possibility, for instance, that the 12-inch display reference actually pertains to the Surface Laptop Ultra, which is expected to feature a 15-inch screen.
For now, the safest approach is to wait for Microsoft's October 7 event, where the company is expected to shed light on its RTX Spark plans. Until then, treat these rumors as exactly what they are — unconfirmed speculation that may or may not pan out.
