| The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x laptop with 16 GB RAM is now available with a sizable $850 discount. |
In an era where laptop prices seem to climb higher by the month, Lenovo has quietly released a compelling option for budget-conscious buyers who aren't tethered to traditional x86 computing. The IdeaPad Slim 5x Gen 11 arrives as a sub-flagship machine powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Plus 42-100 SoC, and early benchmarks suggest it punches well above its price class.
Performance That Belies the Price Tag
At the heart of the Slim 5x sits Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Plus 42-100, a 3nm chip featuring a 6-core configuration built entirely on Oryon v3 cores running at 4 GHz. In synthetic benchmarks, this ARM-based processor trades blows with Apple's M3 silicon and delivers roughly 37% faster performance than the A18 Pro chip found in Apple's recently announced MacBook Neo.
Compared to x86 competitors like Intel's Core Ultra 7 355 "Panther Lake" found in significantly pricier machines, the X2 Plus 42-100 actually pulls ahead by a few percentage points. For the vast majority of ARM-native workloads, this translates to a system that absolutely flies through everyday tasks.
The x86 Caveat Worth Considering
Needless to say, folks who have workflows heavily dependent on x86-only applications will want to look elsewhere. For non-native applications and gaming, translation layers enter the picture, which inevitably impacts performance in meaningful ways. However, customers with primarily browser-based workflows, along with those using applications with native ARM support, will find themselves plenty pleased with what the Slim 5x brings to the table.

Graphics and Creative Workloads
The Adreno X2-45 iGPU handles graphics duties, and it's no slouch. This integrated GPU keeps pace with AMD's Radeon 880M found in modern APUs like the Ryzen AI 9 465. That means lightweight video editing and photo editing are entirely doable on this machine—a remarkable feat for a budget-focused laptop.
If you're curious how Apple's budget offering compares, the MacBook Neo at $599 raises interesting questions about value propositions in this segment.
Display and Connectivity
The IdeaPad Slim 5x sports a 15-inch IPS panel with a 1920 x 1200 resolution. According to Lenovo, it covers the sRGB color gamut entirely and hits 400 nits of peak brightness. The inclusion of 120 Hz refresh rate support is a welcome touch at this price point, making everything from scrolling to casual gaming feel noticeably smoother.
Port selection is generous for the money:
- Dual USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports
- Dual USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports
- HDMI 2.1
- MicroSD card reader
- 3.5mm audio jack
The Verdict
At its current discounted price on Lenovo's website, the Slim 5x offers a healthy value proposition for users with moderately intensive workloads that don't depend on x86 architecture. It's not for everyone—gamers and professionals tied to legacy Windows applications should look elsewhere—but for students, casual users, and anyone living primarily in a browser, this ARM-powered machine represents one of the better budget laptop deals available right now.
For those ready to embrace the ARM future without breaking the bank, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x is worth a closer look.
