Microsoft’s October 7 Surface Event: Surface Laptop Ultra, RTX Spark S2/S3, and Everything Else We Know

Microsoft is about to do something it hasn’t done in years: host a dedicated Surface event. The company has set October 7 for a special Windows and Surface showcase, and if the latest leaks are accurate, the headline act will be the Surface Laptop Ultra — the first notebook to wear Microsoft’s new “Ultra” badge.

The event is also expected to include the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a machine aimed at developers and AI workloads. Pre-orders are believed to open on October 7, with initial shipments starting in mid-October. In other words, Microsoft isn’t just teasing hardware — it’s preparing to launch it almost immediately.

Surface Laptop Ultra: A 15-inch Mini LED powerhouse

The Surface Laptop Ultra isn’t a complete surprise. Microsoft quietly announced it at Computex 2026 in May, and the company has been laying the groundwork ever since. Now, multiple sources have filled in the blanks.

According to current reports, every Surface Laptop Ultra SKU will feature a 15-inch Mini LED display with a claimed 2,000 nits peak brightness in HDR mode. That’s a significant step up for the Surface line, which has traditionally trailed the brightest premium laptops from Apple, Dell, and Samsung.

All models are also said to ship with a haptic trackpad. Windows Central reports that it is roughly 30% larger than the equivalent trackpad inside the Surface Laptop 8 15-inch. If you want a baseline for comparison, we reviewed the Surface Laptop 8 15-inch earlier this week — it’s currently priced at $1,384 on Amazon.

That larger haptic trackpad could be a subtle but important upgrade. Microsoft has been refining haptic feedback across its hardware, and a bigger surface area would make gestures, precision selection, and creative work feel more natural. For a laptop positioned as an “Ultra” device, those details matter.

RTX Spark S2 and S3: Nvidia silicon comes to Surface

The biggest question around the Surface Laptop Ultra has been what’s inside. According to hardware leaker Roland Quandt, the answer is Nvidia’s new RTX Spark platform — specifically the RTX Spark S2 and RTX Spark S3.

In a Bluesky post, Quandt demonstrated that the Surface Laptop Ultra features RTX Spark S2 or S3 processors. The leaked configurations point to two clear tiers:

  • RTX Spark S2: 18 CPU cores, a 5,120-core GPU, and 24 GB or 32 GB of RAM.
  • RTX Spark S3: 20 CPU cores, a 6,144-core GPU, and 32 GB, 48 GB, 64 GB, or 128 GB of RAM.

That’s a serious amount of graphics and AI compute for a Surface laptop. It also explains why Microsoft is using the “Ultra” name instead of folding this into the standard Surface Laptop lineup. This isn’t just a spec refresh — it’s a new performance class.

For developers, creators, and AI-focused users, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box could be even more interesting. Microsoft has been pushing Windows as a platform for local AI workloads, and a dedicated dev box with RTX Spark hardware would fit that strategy perfectly.

Pricing, pre-orders, and release date

Pricing is where things get expensive. Windows Central expects the Surface Laptop Ultra to start well above $2,000, with that entry point including the RTX Spark S2 and 24 GB of RAM. For a fuller breakdown of what to expect at the event, Windows Central’s preview is worth reading.

Roland Quandt, meanwhile, reports that pricing will range “from under ~3K to over ~7K” for high-end configurations. That means a fully loaded Surface Laptop Ultra with the RTX Spark S3 and 128 GB of RAM could cost more than most MacBook Pro models.

Pre-orders are believed to open on October 7, the same day as the event. Initial shipments are expected to begin in mid-October. If that timeline holds, Microsoft is planning a very short gap between announcement and availability — a strategy that would build momentum quickly and avoid the long waits that have frustrated Surface buyers in the past.

Why the October 7 event matters

Microsoft has spent years positioning Surface as a premium Windows showcase. But the Surface Laptop Ultra feels different. It’s the first Surface to use the Ultra branding, the first to adopt Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform, and potentially the first to push Windows into a new era of agentic OS capabilities.

The event may also include new Windows 11 features focused on AI agents, which would tie directly into the RTX Spark hardware. If Microsoft can demonstrate real-world benefits — faster local AI processing, better creative workflows, and smoother developer experiences — the Surface Laptop Ultra could justify its high price.

For now, all eyes are on October 7. Microsoft has a chance to redefine what a Surface laptop can be. The leaks suggest the hardware is ready. The only question is whether the software and pricing can make the case.
