Googlebooks Are Here, But Intel Models Come With a Catch: Not All Android Apps Play Nice

Googlebooks are said to offer some unusual features.

Google's new hybrid laptops promise the best of both worlds, but early adopters with Intel-powered models may run into unexpected app compatibility headaches.

The first wave of Googlebooks has officially arrived, marking what many see as the eventual replacement for Chromebooks. With Googlebook OS, Google is promising a significantly more versatile operating system that can also run conventional Android apps — a major selling point for users who want laptop productivity with access to their favorite mobile software. The first few models are already shipping around the globe, and early reviews suggest the hardware is impressive.

But there's a wrinkle in the story that Google hasn't been shouting from the rooftops.

The Intel vs. Qualcomm Divide

Google has now confirmed to Android Authority that buyers of a Googlebook with an Intel processor rather than a Qualcomm processor will have to contend with some limitations. As it turns out, not all Android apps run smoothly on a Googlebook with an x86 processor rather than an ARM processor.

The reason is rooted in how Android apps are built. Virtually all Android apps are developed with the smartphone-based ARM architecture in mind, not the x86 architecture that Intel chips use. Three out of the five Googlebooks available at launch are powered by x86-based Intel chips, which raised questions about whether those devices would face app compatibility issues compared to their Qualcomm-powered counterparts.

According to Google, the answer is: sometimes, yes.

"The vast majority of Android apps run smoothly across both Intel and Qualcomm Googlebooks right out of the box," a Google spokesperson told Android Authority. "Because many Android apps were originally designed for Arm chips, a small handful of complex apps or games need some developer tuning to run their best on Intel-based platforms. We're working hand-in-hand with app developers, Intel, and Qualcomm to continuously optimize performance and expand compatibility across the entire portfolio."

In other words, while "most" apps should run without issue, some more complex apps and games require updates from developers to optimize them for Intel-based Googlebooks. Google has not published a list of apps that currently do not run smoothly on Intel laptops, leaving buyers to discover potential issues on their own.

A Visual Guide to Your Googlebook

One of the unique features of Googlebooks is the "Glow Bar," a light strip that provides quick visual feedback on power, battery status, and other important system activities. Even when the screen is off, it lets you see at a glance what your Googlebook is doing.

If you're curious about what those different light patterns mean — from the four-color gradient that indicates shutdown to the pulsing red light that warns of a charging error — Google has published a comprehensive guide to the Glow Bar indicator lights and settings. You can learn more about how to customize this feature and what each pattern signifies by visiting Google's official support page.

The Android 17 Requirement

It's also worth noting that many of the features that connect Googlebooks to smartphones require Android 17 and are therefore unavailable on older smartphones. This includes some of the most compelling cross-device features that Google has been promoting:

  • Accessing the smartphone's file system from the laptop
  • Transferring active tasks between devices
  • Syncing push notifications
  • Streaming the smartphone's screen to the laptop's display

If you're still using a phone that hasn't received the Android 17 update, you'll miss out on these seamless integration features that are meant to be a key part of the Googlebook experience.

What Google Is Promoting

Despite these caveats, Google remains confident in its new product line. The company's promotional video highlights AI features such as intelligent search, advanced speech transcription, and Gemini Spark. But Google is also keen to emphasize the simpler things: the clean Android-style user interface, Googlebook's long battery life, and the wide selection of apps available through the Play Store.

During a media briefing, Google previously said the Play Store offers a curated section of optimized Googlebook apps, but that unoptimized apps can still be downloaded. Googler Dieter Bohn even claimed in a social media video that "you've got the entire Play Store library on Googlebooks." The company clearly didn't mention issues with some apps on Intel devices until now.

The Bottom Line for Buyers

Google is confident that the overwhelming majority of apps will run just fine on Intel-powered laptops. Still, for anyone considering a Googlebook purchase, the processor choice now carries more weight than ever. If you rely on specific Android apps or games, it may be worth researching compatibility before committing to an Intel-based model — or simply opting for a Qualcomm-powered Googlebook to avoid potential headaches altogether.

We've reached out to Google for further clarification on Android app support and will update this article as soon as we hear back. We'll also be testing app compatibility on an Intel-powered Googlebook as part of our upcoming review coverage.
