| Pavan Davuluri introducing the magnetic USB-C charger shipping with each Surface Ultra laptop |
Universal USB-C charging has slowly but surely replaced the old barrel-style chargers that once made every laptop feel like it needed its own dedicated power brick. For its upcoming Surface Laptop Ultra, Microsoft is trying to take that convenience one step further by introducing what it calls the world’s first magnetic USB-C charging cable.
According to early demonstrations, the Surface Laptop Ultra will ship with a unique USB-C port that supports a new 140 W magnetic USB-C cable. The cable snaps into place much like Apple’s MagSafe connectors or Microsoft’s older Surface Connect chargers, which means it can disconnect safely if someone trips over the cord. It is a small quality-of-life feature, but one that could make a big difference for people who have accidentally yanked a laptop off a table.
As mundane as magnetic charging may sound, Microsoft is using it as a way to distinguish the Surface Laptop Ultra from the growing wave of upcoming Nvidia Spark laptops from MSI, Asus, Lenovo, and others. At least for now, the feature will debut only on the Surface Laptop Ultra, giving Microsoft’s premium machine a bit of exclusive flair.

The Magnetic USB-C Cable Has Some Catchy Limitations
Despite the appeal of a snapping USB-C charger, there are a few important caveats. First, while the magnetic USB-C port on the Surface Laptop Ultra itself is still compatible with standard USB-C cables, the magnetic cable is not universal. Its connector is slightly thicker than a typical USB-C plug, so it will not work with other USB-C devices, smartphones, or tablets. Microsoft has hinted that the technology could appear on future PCs, but the company says details are still too early to share.
Second, only one of the three USB-C ports on the Surface Laptop Ultra actually supports the magnetic charger. That means you can only use the magnetic cable with the USB-C port along the right edge of the system. All three USB-C ports remain compatible with most generic USB-C chargers, so you are not locked into Microsoft’s special cable, but the limitation is still odd. On a laptop that starts at $2,600, many users will wonder why Microsoft did not make all three USB-C ports magnetic-compatible from the start.
Third, the magnetic cable is noticeably wider than a standard USB-C cable because of the extra hardware required inside the connector. An exploded view of the design shows that the magnetic mechanism adds bulk, which means the cable or port could obstruct adjacent ports depending on the laptop’s layout. On a thin-and-light machine where port space is already tight, that could become an annoyance for anyone who frequently plugs in multiple accessories.
A Clever Idea With First-Generation Compromises
The Surface Laptop Ultra with Nvidia Spark is now available for pre-order starting at $2,600. For that price, buyers are getting a flagship Windows laptop with a premium design, powerful internals, and now a magnetic USB-C charging system that no other laptop currently offers.
Still, the feature feels like a classic first-generation experiment: clever, useful in theory, but limited in ways that may frustrate early adopters. If Microsoft can refine the technology, reduce the connector size, and eventually bring it to more ports and more devices, magnetic USB-C charging could become a genuinely useful standard. For now, it is an exclusive bonus for Surface Laptop Ultra buyers — and one more reason to keep an eye on how the USB-C charging wars evolve.
